Last night we experienced a power failure in our apartment. Losing power in the DR is not unusual; in fact it happens almost every day. So yesterday afternoon when we lost our power at 2:30 we thought nothing of it. It always comes back in 4 to 5 hours, always. However last night it was getting dark, it was 7:00pm and our “Inversor” (battery backup) was starting to fail. That’s when Hna. Johnson noticed that our neighbors had had power so we should have. After double checking the circuit breakers and everything I called our “Dueña” (Landlord) Nieves Henriques and reported the problem.
Our Dueña came right over with her son, Brian, and for the next 3 hours we couldn’t find the source of the problem. Some things worked but most didn’t. If we plugged in the refrigerator the lights in the living room started blinking on and off. It was a little scary. But we did experience a small miracle, our air conditioning unit in our bed room worked just fine! It was the only thing in the house that did work. It was a small miracle but a miracle none the less so Hna. Johnson spent the night in a dark apartment with air conditioning in our bedroom. Even though the refrigerator was getting warm and the frozen meat in the freezer was starting to thaw, we got a very good night’s sleep last night.
First thing this morning Nieves arrived with an electrician. He found the problem in just a few minutes. Our ground wire had a loose connection that had caused it to melt the wire and loose its connection to ground. It was an easy fix and the food in the refrigerator was all still good thanks to a couple of large bags of Ice.
This morning was a crazy day in the office; it was very busy. The really neat thing about this morning was our old friends; Elder Bates and Elder Araya were back. Elder Bates is the new AP in the capital and Elder Araya is the new AP in the South. When we walked into the office this morning it was like going to a great family reunion. Hna. Johnson and I are delighted to get to work with both Elders again. We really love our office Elders. Hna. Johnson treats them all like her own sons she baked them a pumpkin pie!
President Almonte was in the office until noon meeting with all of the office staff as well as Hno. Quimerio from Centro de Servicio to resolve his Laptop’s computer problems also to resolve the Neyba Branch MLS/budget problems. The President was very busy. I really don’t know how he has enough time in the day to get all of the work done he has to do.
