We were off early this morning to drive to the “South” to attend Fast and Testimony meeting with the members in Duvergé. On our way we stopped in Sabana Yegua to drop off Mail and supplies to Elder Urry and his companion Elder Le Chaeminant. Elder Urry is training Elder Le Chaeminant and they’ve been companions for two transfers now.

Hna. Johnson and I used to drive to the “South” every weekend to attend meetings with the members in Neyba and Duvergé. Our trip this morning brought back fond memories of our first 8 months in the mission when I was the branch president of both branches. We grew very close to all of the members out there. We saw them progress and grow in the gospel.

The Duvergé members are technically not a Branch. They are a “Dependent Group” attached to the Branch in Neyba, about 15 miles away. Ever since I was released as Branch President, the Group there have had Hno. Tomas Moquete as their Group Leader. He is actually a counselor in the Neyba Branch Presidency.

After the block of meetings we went over to the home of Josefina Perez, the mother of Mecho, who passed away last May. (See Tuesday, May 11, 2010) We had a nice visit with her and we talked about her daughter and how much she loved the gospel and loved doing missionary work. Hna. Perez and Hna. Johnson were weeping as they talked about Mecho. She was a wonder sister and a great example to us all. We will always find memories of our beloved Mecho.

Hna. Johnson experienced a FIRST on our trip back to the capital. I got drowsy while driving and asked Hna. Johnson to take the wheel. She drove for an hour and a half while I napped. This was the very first time Hna. Johnson has driven the car on the open road in the DR. She has driven a couple of times in the capital but only between our apt. and the office.

Dominican drivers are CRAZY and Hna. Johnson has always insisted that she didn’t want to ever drive in the DR. On occasion, after some of the bazaar antics pulled by “Guagua” (Bus) or “Motor” (Motorcycle) drivers, Hna. Johnson has declared, “If I were driving I’d just run him over!” Well, Hna. Johnson did a great job of driving this afternoon. She took on the crazy Dominican drivers on their own turf, she didn’t take any of their nonsense, she didn’t back down and she did it all without killing a single one. Way to go Hna. Johnson!
