This week Victor Pimentel, our apartment’s handyman has been cleaning all of the roof top water tanks at the apartment complex. He says they need to be washed out every 3 months with Clorox and Acid but this is only the 2nd time he’s done ours since we’ve been here. It only costs me about $10.00USD to have him do the cleaning so it is really worth it. He took me on the roof to show me how dirty the bottom of the tank was. It really does need to be cleaned. As he scrubbed the sides, last little bit of water in the bottom was brown and full of algae, Yuk.

The water tank on the roof is really necessary. The city water supply is so unreliable that all resident buildings have huge cisterns (underground water storage tanks) to keep the building supplied with water when the city water is off. Each apartment has its own individual water tank on the roof. The water from the cistern is pumped to the roof into each of the rooftop tanks. In this way we all have a couple of day’s supply of water when the city system fails for days at a time. We don’t drink this water but we do use it for washing dishes, laundry and showers.
