Sunday, May 9, 2010 (Mother’s Day)

This morning I gave the lesson I prepared for Elder’s Quorum in the “Los Arroyos” branch. It is a pleasure to teach this group of men in the branch. There are usually about 10 to 12 in attendance and one or two investigators. Today as always in the past everyone participates in the lesson and it goes very smoothly. I enjoy the experience very much. I get to teach the quorum lesson twice a month, on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays.

Today is Mother’s Day in the USA. In the Dominican Republic it won’t be Mother’s day until the last Sunday of May. If you think the mother of an Elder anticipates her phone call from her missionary it’s nothing compared to the anticipation the Elders feel. I’ve been listening to missionaries discuss this most important day for weeks now.

And… Just like a good missionary, Hna. Johnson made her important phone call home to her mother (and father) this afternoon. However it was better than a phone call, it was a “Webcam” call and we got a bonus, Hna. Johnson’s brother, Gary Burk and his family were visiting so she got to see and talk to all of them.

The webcam calls didn’t end there, for the next 4 hours we were talking to almost all of our sons and their families on the webcam or on the phone. Time really does fly when you’re having fun. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the time and realized we had been talking to our family for almost 4 yours this afternoon and evening. But the length of time really isn’t important especially since it’s free on the webcam. The important part is talking to loved ones and feeling their support and love for us. It was a wonderful Mother’s Day.

And as if it couldn’t get any better than talking on the webcam, it did get better. There were Mother’s Day gifts! A week ago Hna. Johnson got a Mother’s Day package in the mail from her family. All of them chipped in and bought her a “Mother’s Bracelet” with small pictures of all of her sons with their families. She really was surprised. What a great gift idea; she really loves it.

In the same package was a Father’s Day gift for me. When we were on the webcam with Nathan and Valerie they told me to open it even though it wasn’t Father’s Day yet. I was really surprised because my gift was a custom made deck of card of my favorite game, “Go to Heck”. And by custom, I really mean custom. The game is usually played with a deck of “Rook” cards, but in this deck every card had a picture of a member of our family on it in addition to the usual colored numbers in the corners. Wow, it was really great. It is a wonderful and special Father’s Day gift.
